~Night School is best viewed on the Substack website~
Hello! Welcome to Week 14!
This week I moved into an apartment where I now live alone for the first time ever! WHAT!? A LOT also happened on ~the Internet~ and it was fun for the first time in a long time. Let’s get into it.
Stonks
From Wednesday onward my feed was absolutely dominated by content covering the Reddit vs Wall Street drama over GameStop. Early on it was mostly videos of people hyping up purchasing stock in GameStop, AMC, Nokia and BlackBerry among other failing companies. These videos and most of the comments were asking audiences to take these stocks “TO THE MOON 🚀🚀”.
Many individuals were using the app Robinhood to purchase stocks with its user-friendly interface making investing feel more like a video game. There came a point when Robinhood started blocking the purchase of these pumping stocks and long story short, the app is now being sued.
Eventually the meme crypto-currency, DogeCoin became a focus and rose by something insane like +800%. I found myself succumbing to the hype and attempted to purchase a tiny amount of BlackBerry stock which Robinhood eventually approved only to auto-cancel. Gotta love it.
Oh, and I purchased $3 worth of Dogecoin which made me approximately $10 for a couple minutes.
This whole situation is a big middle finger to Wall Street and I’m 100% here for it
Aaaand I can’t help but feel a sense of joy at seeing footage of billionaires crying on live television over all of this.
Here’s a fun lil article discussing the origin of the meme term “stonks”
